i. Biography
Jean-Louis Chave is the 16th generation winemaker at Domaine Jean-Louis Chave in Mauves, France, taking over the family estate in the early 1990s from his father Gérard, who expanded holdings to 14.5 hectares on Hermitage hill. He studied enology at UC Davis in California before joining the domaine in 1992, focusing on revitalizing historic Saint-Joseph vineyards like Bachasson and Clos de l'Arbalestrier while maintaining traditional methods in Hermitage. The Chave family has produced wines in the Northern Rhône since 1481, originally in Saint-Joseph before acquiring Hermitage land post-phylloxera.
