i. Biography
Johnson Wong is the chef and founder of Gēn, a fine dining restaurant opened in 2018 in George Town, Penang, Malaysia, specializing in contemporary Malaysian cuisine that celebrates local ingredients, earning a spot on Asia’s 100 Best Restaurants 51-100 list in 2021 and MICHELIN Selected status in the 2024 Guide. Originally from Johor, he graduated from Le Cordon Bleu in Sydney, trained in top global kitchens including Michelin-starred establishments, served as executive chef at Macalister Mansion in Penang, and later founded Communal Table by Gēn, which received a Bib Gourmand in the 2024 MICHELIN Guide. He was awarded the MICHELIN Guide Kuala Lumpur and Penang 2024 Young Chef Award.
